Automatic accompaniment for vocal melodies

One or more computer-readable storage media having stored thereon computer-executable instructions for implementing a graphical user interface that, when executed by at least one processor, perform operations comprising:

• displaying a control to harmonize and/or reharmonize a recorded melody;
• displaying, in a chord display, chords selected by an accompaniment generator after harmonizing or reharmonizing the recorded melody the chords being selected by the accompaniment generator based in part on:
• blending chord transition matrices into a resultant chord transition matrix, the chord transition matrices comprising learned chord transition probabilities based on each chord in a set of songs;
• blending melody observation matrices into a resultant melody observation matrix, the melody observation matrices comprising learned note duration probabilities based on each note in each chord in the set of songs;
• training a Hidden Markov Model using the resultant chord transition matrix and the resultant melody observation matrix;
• displaying a control to lock one or more of the chords in the chord display;
• displaying a sorted key list that displays user selectable keys that identifies a key determined by the accompaniment generator that best fits the recorded melody.

A graphical user interface, implemented at least in part by a computing device, the graphical user interface comprising:

• a chord chart to display chords selected by an accompaniment generator for harmonizing a recorded melody, the chords being selected by the accompaniment generator based on:
• blending chord transition matrices into a resultant chord transition matrix, the chord transition matrices comprising learned chord transition probabilities based on each chord in a set of songs;
• blending melody observation matrices into a resultant melody observation matrix, the melody observation matrices comprising learned note duration probabilities based on each note in each chord in the set of songs;
• training a Hidden Markov Model using the resultant chord transition matrix and the resultant melody observation matrix;
• and
• using the Hidden Markov Model to facilitate selection of the chords;
• one or more controls for adjusting a jazz factor to control a melody observation weight used by the accompaniment generator for biasing chord sequences used for harmonizing the recorded melody;
• and
• a sorted key list that displays user selectable keys that identifies a key determined by the accompaniment generator that best fits the recorded melody.
