Abstract
The invention is concerned with cauterizing and resecting tissue. A pair of electrodes are placed on opposed tissue surfaces, and radio frequency power is applied through the electrodes to cauterizing a tissue mass therebetween. After cauterization has been effected, the tissue may be resected along a plane within the cauterized region with minimum or no bleeding. The tissue mass may then be removed.
Claims22
An apparatus for cauterizing tissue, comprising:
- a plurality of electrodes for engagement with treatment surfaces of a tissue mass;
- a power supply connectable to said electrodes for selectively applying high frequency power thereto to cauterize tissue between said treatment surfaces, said power supply configured to provide each electrode with a unique power and energy delivery profile based on properties of said tissue in a specific electrode location;
- and
- at least one sensor proximate to said electrodes and/or proximate to said tissue adapted to generate a signal for controlling said power supply to modulate said high frequency power output from said power supply in real time based upon monitoring of at least two of the following parameters by the at least one sensor:
- current, voltage, impedance, energy, power, temperature, and time
- wherein threshold values associated with said electrodes are set;
- wherein the threshold values are determined to be reached based on said monitoring;
- wherein power continues to be provided to the associated electrodes for a certain period of time such that an appropriate endpoint is reached and to assure that cauterization is complete, when a threshold value of said threshold values is reached;
- and
- wherein power generator channels, which are assigned to electrodes for portions of the tissue and which have reached endpoints, are reassigned to those electrodes that are still actively cauterizing the tissue.

An apparatus for tissue cauterization, comprising:
- a plurality of electrodes for engagement against one or more surfaces of said tissue;
- a power supply having a plurality of channels that are selectively connectable to said electrodes for selectively applying radio frequency energy thereto, said power supply providing multiple, selectable adjustable settings that are based on a tissue to be cauterized, said power supply configured to provide each electrode with a unique power and energy delivery profile based on properties of said tissue in a specific electrode location;
- an automatic feedback system adapted for controlling said radio frequency energy output from said power supply in real time based upon monitoring by said automatic feedback system with a monitoring means of at least two of the following parameters:
- current, voltage, impedance, energy, power, temperature, and time;
- and
- a control mechanism for supplying radio frequency energy to said electrodes from said power supply to apply said energy to said tissue through said electrodes to selectively energize different ones of said electrodes, and independently applying said power via at least two of said electrodes to said tissue;
- wherein each electrode is treated independently in terms of energy transmission and RF cycle monitoring, modulation, and termination;
- wherein each electrode is configurable to have a difference power curve that is modulated in real time;
- wherein threshold values associated with said electrodes are set by said control mechanism;
- wherein the threshold values are determined to be reached based on said monitoring;
- wherein power continues to be provided to the associated electrodes for a certain period of time such that an appropriate endpoint is reached and to assure that cauterization is complete, when a threshold value of said threshold values is reached;
- and
- wherein power generator channels, which are assigned to electrodes for portions of the tissue and which have reached endpoints, are reassigned to those electrodes that are still actively cauterizing the tissue.
