Abstract
A band control system for a digital subscriber line network in which a first apparatus and a second apparatus situated at a subscriber station and a center, respectively, are interconnected by a cable for interchanging at least a digital data signal with each other. The system may cause one of the first apparatus or the second apparatus to monitor receipt of signals from the other of the first apparatus or the second apparatus; send, based on a result of monitoring, a band variation command to the other apparatus for causing the other apparatus to vary a band by using a frequency band not used for signal transfer; cause the other apparatus to receive the band variation command; and vary the band in accordance with the band variation command.
Claims17
A system comprising:
- a first device to:
- transmit Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) signals to a second device via a first frequency band,
- receive a band control signal, for adjusting a frequency band, from the second device via a second frequency band that is lower than the first frequency band,
- adjust the first frequency band by narrowing or broadening the first frequency band in response to receiving the band control signal, and
- transmit subsequent DSL signals to the second device over the adjusted first frequency band,
- the second device to:
- receive the DSL signals from the first device,
- determine whether a quantity of ATM cells received exceeds a range,
- generate the band control signal when the quantity of ATM cells exceeds the range or when a ratio of discarded ATM cells exceeds a second range, and
- transmit the band control signal to the first device.
A method comprising:
- monitoring, at a first device, Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) communications received from a second device, the DSL communications being received via a first frequency band, the monitoring including:
- measuring a ratio of discarded ATM cells from the DSL communications from the second device;
- and
- dynamically adjusting, based on the monitoring, the first frequency band used by the second device by sending a control signal, for adjusting a frequency band, from the first device to the second device via a second frequency band, the second frequency band being lower than the first frequency band, the dynamically adjusting including:
- dynamically adjusting the first frequency band when the ratio of discarded ATM cells exceeds a range.
A system comprising:
- a Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM) to:
- measure an amount of ATM cells received from a device or a ratio of discarded ATM cells from the device, the device being situated at a subscriber station, and
- transmit a band control signal, for adjusting a frequency band, to the device when the amount of ATM cells or the ratio of discarded ATM cells from the device exceeds a range, the band control signal being transmitted via a frequency band that is not used for DSL communications and causing the device to adjust a frequency band used to transmit DSL communications to the DSLAM.
