Abstract
A disposable absorbent article having a durable hydrophilic substantially liquid pervious core wrap surrounding a storage layer. The core wrap has a hydrophilicity boosting composition coated on a core wrap substrate. The hydrophilicity boosting composition includes a hydrophilicity boosting amount nanoparticles having a particle size of from about 1 nanometer to about 750 nanometers.
Claims11
A disposable absorbent article comprising an absorbent core disposed between a topsheet and a backsheet, said absorbent core comprising:
- (a) a storage layer;
- and
- (b) a durable, hydrophilic fluid pervious core wrap, said core wrap surrounding at least a portion of said storage layer, said core wrap comprising:
- a nonwoven core wrap substrate formed from a plurality of fibers selected from the group consisting of polyolefin fibers, polyester fibers, and combinations thereof, said substrate including a top layer disposed between the storage layer and the topsheet and a bottom layer disposed between the storage layer and the backsheet, wherein said top layer of the substrate is coated with a hydrophilicity boosting composition and said bottom layer of the substrate is not coated with the hydrophilicity boosting composition, at least some of said fibers or portions thereof being disposed in said bottom layer of the substrate that is not coated with the hydrophilicity boosting composition are free of said hydrophilicity boosting composition, and wherein said hydrophilicity boosting composition comprises a hydrophilicity boosting amount of nanoparticles having a particle size of from about 1 to about 750 nanometers, and wherein said substrate has been treated with a high-energy surface treatment.
A process for making a disposable absorbent article comprising an absorbent core, said absorbent core comprising a storage layer disposed between a topsheet and a backsheet and a durable hydrophilic core wrap, said core wrap surrounding at least a portion of said storage layer and said process comprising:
- forming a nonwoven core wrap substrate from a plurality of fibers selected from the group consisting of polyolefin fibers, polyester fibers, and combinations thereof;
- and
- coating the core wrap substrate with a hydrophilicity boosting composition comprising a hydrophilicity boosting amount of nanoparticles having a particle size of from about 1 to about 750 nanometers, such that said substrate includes a top layer disposed between the storage layer and the topsheet and a bottom layer disposed between the storage layer and the backsheet, wherein said top layer of the substrate is coated with the hydrophilicity boosting composition and said bottom layer of the substrate is not coated with the hydrophilicity boosting composition, at least some of said fibers or portions thereof being disposed in said bottom layer of the substrate that is not coated with the hydrophilicity boosting composition are free of said hydrophilicity boosting composition, and wherein prior to or concurrent with coating of said substrate, said substrate is treated with a high energy surface treatment selected from the group consisting of corona discharge treatment, plasma treatment, UV radiation, ion beam treatment, electron beam treatment and combinations thereof.
