Abstract
A method and system that is directed to the local delivery of growth factors to the mammalian CNS to treat CNS disorders associated with neuronal death and/or dysfunction is described.
Claims19
A method of treating a human patient having Parkinson's disease, comprising:
- administering to the putamen of said patient a therapeutically effective amount of a pharmaceutical composition comprising a growth factor that promotes the survival of dopaminergic neurons;
- wherein said growth factor is administered by intermittent convection enhanced delivery (CED) at a rate that counters the tissue clearance rate of said growth factor, wherein there is cessation of growth factor delivery during the intermissions between administrations, wherein the intermissions between administration of said growth factor are at least about one week;
- wherein said human patient is treated for Parkinson's disease.
A method for delivering a growth factor to a target brain tissue in a human patient:
- comprising administering an infusate comprising said growth factor by intermittent convection enhanced delivery at a rate that counters the tissue clearance rate of said growth factor;
- wherein there is cessation of growth factor delivery during the intermissions between administrations, and wherein the intermissions between administration of said growth factor are at least about one week
- wherein said growth factor is delivered to a target brain tissue in a human patient.
