Abstract
According to the invention, a method and system are provided for scanning, and for facilitating scanning of, an intraoral cavity. The target parts of the intraoral cavity that it is desired to have scanned are identified, and the spatial relationships between a scanning device and the target parts of the intraoral cavity suitable for enabling said target parts to be scanned by said scanning device, are also identified or otherwise determined. These relationships are then displayed, and the displayed relationships are used as a guide for scanning the intraoral cavity.
Claims33
A method for scanning an intraoral cavity for providing three dimensional (3D) data thereof, the method comprising:
- (a) using a computer system, identifying target parts of the intraoral cavity that are desired to be scanned;
- (b) using the computer system, generating a plurality of required spatial relationships between a scanning device and said target parts of step (a), wherein the spatial relationships are determined by the computer system to be required for enabling 3D data of the target parts to be obtained by subsequently scanning the target parts by said scanning device;
- (c) outputting the relationships from the computer system and displaying said relationships in a display;
- (d) following step (c), using said displayed relationships as a guide for scanning the intraoral cavity and scanning said intraoral cavity with said scanning device in a manner substantially conforming to said displayed relationships to obtain 3D data of the target parts.
A non-transitory computer readable medium that embodies in a tangible manner a program executable for guiding the scanning of the intraoral cavity of a patient, comprising:
- (a) a first set of data representative of target parts of the intraoral cavity that are desired to be scanned;
- and
- (b) a second set of data representative of spatial relationships between a scanning device and said target parts of the intraoral cavity, wherein the spatial relationships are required for enabling 3D data of the target parts to be obtained by subsequently scanning said target parts by said scanning device.
A system for guiding the scanning of an intraoral cavity, comprising:
- an input module configured for identifying target parts of the intraoral cavity that are desired to be scanned;
- a processing module configured for generating a plurality of spatial relationships between a scanning device and said target parts of the intraoral cavity, wherein the spatial relationships are determined by the processing module to be required for enabling 3D data of said target parts to be obtained by subsequently scanning the target parts by said scanning device;
- and
- a display module configured for displaying said relationships.
