This invention relates generally to the field of maize breeding, specifically relating to a maize variety designated PHWTN.
The goal of plant breeding is to combine, in a single variety or hybrid, various desirable traits. For field crops, these traits may include resistance to diseases and insects, resistance to heat and drought, reducing the time to crop maturity, greater yield, and better agronomic quality. With mechanical harvesting of many crops, uniformity of plant characteristics such as germination, stand establishment, growth rate, maturity, plant height and ear height, is important. Traditional plant breeding is an important tool in developing new and improved commercial crops.
According to the invention, there is provided a novel maize variety, designated PHWTN and processes for making PHWTN. This invention relates to seed of maize variety PHWTN, to the plants of maize variety PHWTN, to plant parts of maize variety PHWTN, and to processes for making a maize plant that comprise crossing maize variety PHWTN with another maize plant. This invention also relates to processes for making a maize plant containing in its genetic material one or more traits introgressed into PHWTN through backcross conversion and/or transformation, and to the maize seed, plant and plant part produced by such introgression. This invention further relates to a hybrid maize seed, plant or plant part produced by crossing the variety PHWTN or an introgressed trait conversion of PHWTN with another maize variety. This invention also relates to maize varieties derived from maize variety PHWTN to processes for making other maize varieties derived from maize variety PHWTN and to the maize varieties and their parts produced by the use of those processes.

Morphological and Physiological Characteristics of PHWTN
Maize variety PHWTN may be used as either a male or female in the production of the first generation F1 maize hybrid although PHWTN may be best suited for use as both. Inbred PHWTN is best adapted to the Central Corn Belt in the United States and can be used to make hybrids of approximately 108 rm maturity based on the Comparative Relative Maturity Rating System. Inbred line PHWTN demonstrates very high grain yield, above average early growth and above average pollen weight as an inbred per se. In hybrid combinations, PHVNW demonstrates above average yield, above average stalk lodging resistance, below average late root lodging resistance and below average plant height. For its area of adaptation, PHVNW exhibits above average grain yield, good stalks and below average plant height.
