A process for purifying t-butyl (3R)-3-(t-butyldimethylsilyloxy)-6-dimethoxyphosphinyl-5-oxohexanoate (19TBPO) comprising combining a composition containing 19TBPO with basic and/or oxidizing agents, and then extracting the 19TBPO into a water immiscible organic solvent.
