The invention relates to a process for synthesizing tertiary phosphines by reacting halophosphines with organomagnesium compounds in the presence of copper compounds and optionally of salts.

A phosphonium salt selected from the group consisting of di(tert-butyl)phenylphosphonium tetrafluoroborate, di(tert-butyl)phenylphosphonium hexafluorophosphate, di(tert-butyl)phenylphosphonium hydrogen hexafluorozirconate and di(tert-butyl)phenylphosphonium hydrogen hexafluorotitanate.
