A compound represented by the following formula (1), a liquid crystal composition containing the compound and a liquid crystal display device containing the composition: all the symbols in the formula (1) are defined in the specification.

A compound represented by the following formula (1):
- wherein Ra and Rb are independently hydrogen or alkyl having from 1 to 20 carbons, wherein arbitrary —CH2— in the alkyl may be replaced by —O—, —S—, —CO— or —SiH2—, arbitrary —(CH2)2— may be replaced by —CH═CH— or —C≡C—, and wherein arbitrary hydrogen may be replaced by halogen;
- wherein ring A1 is independently 1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene, pyridine-2,5-diyl, pyridazine-3,6-diyl, decahydronaphthalene-2,6-diyl, 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene-2,6-diyl or naphthalene-2,6-diyl, wherein arbitrary —CH2— in each of A1 may be replaced by —O—, —S—, —CO— or —SiH2—, and wherein arbitrary —(CH2)2— in each of A1 may be replaced by —CH═CH—, and wherein arbitrary hydrogen in each of A1 may be replaced by halogen, —CF3, —CHF2, —CH2F, —OCF3, —OCHF2 or —OCH2F;
- wherein Z1 is independently a single bond or alkylene having from 1 to 4 carbons, wherein arbitrary —CH2— in the alkylene may be replaced by —O—, —S—, —CO— or —SiH2—, wherein arbitrary —(CH2)2— in the alkylene may be replaced by —CH═CH— or —C≡C—, and wherein arbitrary hydrogen may be replaced by halogen;
- wherein W is —COO—, —OCO—, —CH2O—, —OCH2—, —CF2O—, —OCF2—, —CH═CH—, —CH═CF—, —CF═CH—, —CF═CF—, —C≡C—, —CH2CO—, —COCH2—, —CH2SiH2—, —SiH2CH2—, —(CH2)4—, —(CH2)2COO—, —OCO(CH2)2—, —(CH2)3O—, —O(CH2)3—, (CH2)2CF2O—, —(CH2)2OCF2—, —CF2O(CH2)2—, —OCF2(CH2)2—, —CH═CH—CH2O—, —OCH2—CH═CH—, —CF2CH2—, —(CH2)2OCH2—, —CH2S—;
- wherein Y1 is hydrogen or fluorine , and wherein at least one of Y1 is fluorine;
- wherein Rc is alkyl having from 1 to 4 carbons, wherein arbitrary —CH2— in the alkyl may be replaced by —O—, —S—, —CO— or —SiH2—,
- wherein m is independently 0, 1 or 2;
- but wherein the sum of plural numbers of m is 0, 1 or 2.
