Combiner for improving handwriting recognition

A computer-readable recording medium having computer-executable instructions for causing a computer to perform steps comprising:

• provide access to a first comparator-net process and a first reorder-net process that have been trained based on print and cursive data, training of the first comparator-net process having included comparing of a plurality of character pairs of a first alternate list and storing a set of weights associated with each of the compared plurality of character pairs of the first alternate list, each of the compared plurality of character pairs of the first alternate list including a correct character and an incorrect character;
• provide access to a second comparator-net process and a second reorder-net process that have been trained based on cursive-only data, training of the second comparator-net process having included comparing of a plurality of character pairs of a second alternate list and storing a set of weights associated with each of the compared plurality of character pairs of the second alternate list, each of the compared plurality of character pairs of the second alternate list including a correct character and an incorrect character;
• receive a handwritten input from a user;
• run the handwritten input through each one of a plurality of recognizers to generate a respective runtime alternate list with respect to each of the plurality of recognizers;
• merge the respective runtime alternate lists to generate a new runtime alternate list;
• if the handwritten input is determined to be print, use the first comparator-net process on the new runtime alternate list and the first reorder-net process on a result of the first comparator-net process to perform a recognition operation on the handwritten input;
• and
• if the handwritten input is determined to be cursive, use the second comparator-net process on the new runtime alternate list and the second reorder-net process on a result of the second comparator-net process to perform the recognition operation on the handwritten input.
