Described herein are nitrated lipids and methods of making and using the nitrated lipids.

A method for treating inflammation in a subject with inflammation or at risk for inflammation, comprising administering an effective amount of a fatty acid having at least one carbon-carbon double bond and at least one nitro group selected from the group consisting of vinyl nitro groups and allylic nitro groups or pharmaceutically acceptable acid- or base-addition salts thereof.
A method for treating diabetes in a subject in need of treatment, comprising administering an effective amount of a fatty acid having at least one carbon-carbon double bond and at least one nitro group selected from the group consisting of vinyl nitro groups and allylic nitro groups or a pharmaceutically acceptable acid- or base-addition salt thereof to the subject.
A method for treating vascular disease in a subject in need of treatment, comprising administering an effective amount of a fatty acid having at least one carbon-carbon double bond and at least one nitro group selected from the group consisting of vinyl nitro groups and allylic nitro groups or a pharmaceutically acceptable acid- or base-addition salt thereof to the subject.
