Abstract
A method of forming an implant to be implanted into living bone is disclosed. The method comprises the act of roughening at least a portion of the implant surface to produce a roughened surface. The method further comprises the act of depositing discrete nanoparticles on the roughened surface though a one-step process of exposing the roughened surface to a solution. The nanoparticles comprise a material having a property that promotes osseointegration.

A method of forming an implant to be implanted into living bone, the method comprising the acts of:
- roughening at least a portion of the implant surface to produce a microscale roughened surface;
- and
- depositing discrete nanoparticles directly on the roughened surface though a one-step process of exposing the roughened surface to a solution including the nanoparticles, the nanoparticles comprising a material having a property that promotes osseointegration, wherein the act of depositing discrete nanoparticles results in deposition covering less than all of the roughened surface such that a portion of the roughened surface is exposed between at least some of the discrete nanoparticles.
A method of forming an implant to be implanted into living bone, the method comprising the acts of:
- roughening at least a portion of the implant surface to produce a microscale roughened surface;
- and
- depositing discrete nanoparticles directly on the roughened surface though a one-step process of exposing the roughened surface to a solution including the nanoparticles and a 2-methoxyethanol solvent, the nanoparticles comprising a material having a property that promotes osseointegration, the nanoparticles including hydroxyapatite, wherein the act of depositing discrete nanoparticles results in deposition covering less than all of the roughened surface.
A method of forming a dental implant made of a titanium or titanium alloy, the method comprising the acts of:
- etching at least a threaded bottom portion of the implant to remove a native oxide layer;
- after the etching, forming a roughened surface on the threaded bottom portion by use of an acid etching process, the roughened surface having an array of microscale irregularities having peak-to-valley heights not greater than about 20 microns;
- and
- without pretreating the roughened surface, depositing discrete hydroxyapatite nanocrystals directly on the roughened surface by exposure to a solution comprising 2-methoxyethanol solvent and the hydroxyapatite nanocrystals, wherein the act of depositing discrete hydroxyapatite nanocrystals results in deposition covering less than all of the roughened surface.
A method of forming an implant to be implanted into living bone, the method comprising the act of depositing discrete nanoparticles directly on the surface of the implant though a one-step process of exposing the surface to a solution, the nanoparticles comprising a material having a property that promotes osseointegration, wherein the act of depositing discrete nanoparticles results in deposition covering less than all of the surface of the implant such that a portion of the surface is exposed between at least some of the discrete nanoparticles.
A method of forming an implant to be implanted into living bone, the method comprising the acts of:
- providing an implant;
- depositing discrete nanoparticles directly on the surface of the implant though a one-step process of exposing the surface to a solution, the nanoparticles comprising a material having a property that promotes osseointegration;
- rinsing the implant;
- and
- drying the implant,
- wherein the act of depositing discrete nanoparticles results in deposition covering less than all of the surface of the implant such that a portion of the surface of the implant is exposed between at least some of the discrete nanoparticles.
A method of forming a dental implant made of a titanium or titanium alloy, the method comprising the acts of:

- acid etching the threaded bottom portion to form a roughened surface having microscale irregularities having peak-to-valley heights not greater than about 20 microns;
- and
- without pretreating the roughened surface, depositing discrete hydroxyapatite nanocrystals directly on the roughened surface by exposure to a solution comprising 2-methoxyethanol solvent and the hydroxyapatite nanocrystals,
- wherein the act of depositing discrete hydroxyapatite nanocrystals results in deposition covering less than all of the roughened surface of the implant.
