Abstract
A wound closure apparatus having a porous pad adapted to be fluidly connected to a vacuum pump. The pad is placed over or within a tissue site, and the vacuum pump may be activated to draw air and exudates from the tissue site. The pad contains multiple pore sizes to prevent granulation tissue from migrating into the pad as reduced pressure treatment is applied. The pad has an outer surface adjacent the wound with pore sizes of a diameter of approximately 100 microns or less to prevent tissue from growing into the pad and is treated for biocompatibility.
Claims20
A process for making a pad for providing a reduced pressure to a tissue site, the process comprising:
- providing a fluid permeable material having pores of a first average size;
- reducing a portion of the pores in the fluid permeable material to a second average size, wherein the first average size is greater than the second average size;
- and
- providing a pathway for supplying reduced pressure to the pad;
- wherein reduced pressure is applied to the pad.
A process for making a pad, comprising:
- providing a fluid permeable material having pores of a first average size;
- and
- reducing a portion of the pores in the fluid permeable material to a second average size, comprising:
- (i) placing a portion of the pores into a liquid coating material, and
- (ii) hardening the liquid coating material to form a tissue-lubricious surface on the fluid permeable material and a layer of micropores having pores of a second average size adjacent to the tissue-lubricious surface;
- wherein the first average size is greater than the second average size.
