Abstract
A refractory metal composite article includes a refractory metal ceramic section and a refractory metal ceramic coating that together form a porous matrix. A solid filler is within pores of the porous matrix to, for example, reduce a porosity of the refractory metal composite article.
Claims5
A method of manufacturing a refractory metal composite article having a refractory metal ceramic section and a refractory metal ceramic coating that form a composite porous matrix, the method comprising:
- (a) at least partially filling pores within the refractory metal composite article with a solid filler to thereby reduce a porosity of the refractory metal composite article, each of the refractory metal ceramic section and the refractory metal ceramic coating including at least one of a refractory metal carbide, a refractory metal silicide, or a refractory metal boride such that the refractory metal ceramic coating is disposed directly adjacent to the refractory metal ceramic section, and further including depositing a pre-ceramic polymer into the pores and converting the pre-ceramic polymer to a ceramic material.
A method of manufacturing a refractory metal composite article, the method comprising:
- depositing a refractory metal within a porous matrix of a first precursor material, where a quantity of the refractory metal is in stoichiometric excess of a quantity of the precursor material;
- reacting a portion of the refractory metal with the first precursor material to convert the porous matrix of the first precursor material into a porous matrix of refractory metal ceramic with a remainder of the refractory metal;
- depositing a second precursor material adjacent the remainder of the refractory metal within the porous matrix of the refractory metal ceramic;
- reacting the second precursor material with the remainder of the refractory metal to produce a refractory metal ceramic coating on the porous matrix of the refractory metal ceramic, the coating and the porous matrix of the refractory metal ceramic forming a composite porous matrix;
- and
- at least partially filling pores within the composite porous matrix with a solid filler.
