## Abstract

A frequency multiplier circuit comprising a delay line receiving at one end thereof a reference clock for generating clock tap outputs from respective ones of a plurality of period matched delay elements; a clock combining circuit responsive to pairs of tap outputs for generating a rising and falling edge of an output clock pulse from respective ones of the pairs whereby the output clock period is less than the input clock period.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A delay locked loop for providing an output clock signal in response to a reference input clock signal, the delay locked loop comprising:
a delay line having a plurality of serially coupled delay stages, each of the delay stages providing a delay stage output;
a plurality of combining circuit cells, each of the combining cells having inputs respectively coupled to ones of a predetermined number of delay stage outputs, each of the combining cells providing first and second complementary outputs, the outputs of each cell being separated in time by said predetermined number of delay stage outputs;
a selector responsive to a selection control signal for selecting an output from one of a pair of complementary outputs of one of the combining cells, to produce the output clock signal; and
a phase detector responsive to the output clock signal and the reference input clock signal to generate the selection control signal.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The delay locked loop of claim 1 wherein the selector selects an optimum complimentary output for synchronizing the reference input clock signal and said output clock signal.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The delay locked loop of claim 1 wherein each of the combining circuit cells is responsive to a rising edge of a pulse of said input clock for initiating a rising pulse of said output clock and responsive to a delayed version of said input pulse for clearing said pulse and responsive to a falling edge of said input clock pulse to initiate a rising edge of a second output pulse and responsive to a delayed version of said input falling edge for clearing said second output pulse.

### Claim 4 (depends on 2)

The delay locked loop of claim 2 wherein the delay line includes N serially coupled delay stages for providing N tap outputs to N/4 combining circuit cells, the N/4 combining cells providing N/2 evenly spaced phases of the output clock signal whose frequency is twice that of the reference input clock.

### Claim 5 (depends on 2)

The delay locked loop of claim 2 wherein the optimum complementary output is an output having minimal phase difference from the input reference clock signal.

### Claim 6

A method for producing an output clock signal in response to a reference input clock signal, the method comprising:
providing delay stage outputs using a plurality of serially coupled delay stages;
providing a plurality of pairs of first and second complementary outputs, the outputs of each pair being separated in time by a predetermined number of delay stages;
comparing the output clock signal and the reference input clock signal to generate a selection control signal; and
selecting, based on the selection control signal, an output from one of the pairs of complementary outputs to produce the output clock signal.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The method of claim 6 wherein the step of providing delay stage outputs comprises providing N tap outputs to N/4 combining circuit cells for providing N/2 evenly spaced phases of the output clock signal, the frequency of which is twice that of the reference input clock.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The method of claim 7 wherein each of the combining circuit cells is responsive to a rising edge of a pulse of the input clock for initiating a rising pulse of the output clock and responsive to a delayed version of the input pulse for clearing the pulse and responsive to a falling edge of the input clock pulse to initiate a rising edge of a second output pulse and responsive to a delayed version of the input falling edge for clearing the second output pulse.

### Claim 9 (depends on 6)

The method of claim 6 wherein selecting the output selects an optimum complimentary output for synchronizing the reference input clock signal and the output clock signal.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The method of claim 9 wherein the optimum complementary output is an output having minimal phase difference from the input reference clock signal.
