## Abstract

A novel maize variety designated PHP5D and seed, plants and plant parts thereof. Methods for producing a maize plant that comprise crossing maize variety PHP5D with another maize plant. Methods for producing a maize plant containing in its genetic material one or more traits introgressed into PHP5D through backcross conversion and/or transformation, and to the maize seed, plant and plant part produced thereby. Hybrid maize seed, plant or plant part produced by crossing the variety PHP5D or a trait conversion of PHP5D with another maize variety. Inbred maize varieties derived from maize variety PHP5D, methods for producing other inbred maize varieties derived from maize variety PHP5D and the inbred maize varieties and their parts derived by the use of those methods.

## Claims

### Claim 1

Maize variety PHP5D, representative seed of said variety having been deposited under ATCC accession number PTA-10658.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

A seed of the maize variety of claim 1.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

A plant of the maize variety of claim 1.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

A plant part of the maize variety of claim 1.

### Claim 5

A maize variety PHP5D, representative seed of said variety having been deposited under ATCC accession number PTA-10658 further comprising at least one locus conversion, wherein said locus conversion confers a trait wherein said trait is selected from the group consisting of male sterility, site-specific recombination, abiotic stress tolerance, altered phosphorus, altered antioxidants, altered fatty acids, altered essential amino acids, altered carbohydrates, herbicide resistance, insect resistance and disease resistance.

### Claim 6 (depends on 3)

A maize seed produced by crossing the plant of claim 3 with a different maize plant.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

A maize plant produced by growing the maize seed of claim 6.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

A plant part of the maize plant of claim 7.

### Claim 9

A process of producing a conversion of maize variety PHP5D comprising at least one new trait, the process comprising:
(a) crossing a plant of maize variety PHP5D, representative seed of which has been deposited under ATCC Accession Number PTA-10658, with a plant of another maize variety that comprises at least one new trait to produce progeny seed;
(b) harvesting and planting the progeny seed to produce at least one progeny plant of a subsequent generation, said progeny plant comprising the at least one new trait;
(c) crossing the progeny plant with a plant of maize variety PHP5D to produce backcross progeny seed;
(d) harvesting and planting the backcross progeny seed to produce at least one backcross progeny plant; and
(e) repeating steps (c) and (d) for at least three additional generations to produce a converted plant of variety PHP5D, wherein the converted plant of variety PHP5D comprises the at least one new trait.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

A converted plant of variety PHP5D produced by the process of claim 9.

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

A plant part of the plant of claim 10.

### Claim 12 (depends on 10)

A maize seed produced by crossing the plant of claim 10 with a different maize plant.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

A maize plant produced by growing the maize seed of claim 12.

### Claim 14 (depends on 12)

The maize seed of claim 12, wherein the different maize plant comprises at least one locus conversion.

### Claim 15 (depends on 10)

The plant of claim 10, wherein said at least one new trait is selected from the group consisting of male sterility, site-specific recombination, abiotic stress tolerance, altered phosphorus, altered antioxidants, altered fatty acids, altered essential amino acids, altered carbohydrates, herbicide resistance, insect resistance and disease resistance.

### Claim 16 (depends on 7)

A method for developing a second maize plant in a maize plant breeding program comprising applying plant breeding techniques to a first maize plant, or parts thereof, wherein said first maize plant is the maize plant of claim 7, and wherein application of said techniques results in development of said second maize plant.

### Claim 17 (depends on 16)

The method of claim 16, further comprising producing an inbred maize plant derived from the maize variety PHP5D, the method further comprising the steps of:
(a) crossing said second maize plant with itself or a second plant to produce seed of a subsequent generation;
(b) harvesting and planting the seed of the subsequent generation to produce at least one plant of the subsequent generation;
(c) repeating steps (a) and (b) for an additional 2-10 generations to produce an inbred maize plant derived from maize variety PHP5D.

### Claim 18 (depends on 2)

The seed of claim 2, further comprising a transgene.

### Claim 19 (depends on 18)

The seed of claim 18, wherein the transgene confers a trait selected from the group consisting of male sterility, site-specific recombination, abiotic stress tolerance, altered phosphorus, altered antioxidants, altered fatty acids, altered essential amino acids, altered carbohydrates, herbicide resistance, insect resistance and disease resistance.

### Claim 20 (depends on 3)

The plant of claim 3, further comprising a transgene.

### Claim 21 (depends on 20)

The plant of claim 20, wherein the transgene confers a trait selected from the group consisting of male sterility, site-specific recombination, abiotic stress tolerance, altered phosphorus, altered antioxidants, altered fatty acids, altered essential amino acids, altered carbohydrates, herbicide resistance, insect resistance and disease resistance.
