## Abstract

The present invention relates to thermoplastic and polyareneazole pulp for use as reinforcement material in products including for example fluid sealing materials, as a processing aid including its use as a thixotrope, and as a filter material. The pulp comprises (a) irregularly shaped, thermoplastic fiber fibrous structures, (b) irregularly shaped, polyareneazole fibrous structures and (c) water, whereby thermoplastic fiber fibrils and/or stalks are substantially entangled with polyareneazole fibrils and/or stalks. The invention further relates to processes for making such thermoplastic and polyareneazole pulp.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A pulp for use as reinforcement or processing material, comprising:
(a) fibrillated polyolefin fibrous structures, the structures being 60 to 97 weight percent of the total solids;
(b) fibrillated polyarenazole fibrous structures being 3 to 40 weight percent of the total solids;
the polyolefin and the polyarenazole fibrous structures having an average maximum dimension of no more than 5 mm, a length-weighted average length of 0.7 mm to 1.3 mm, and stalks and fibrils where the polyolefin fibrils and/or stalks are substantially entangled with the polyarenazole fibrils and/or stalks.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The pulp of claim 1, wherein the polyolefin fibrous structures are about 60 to 75 weight percent of the total solids.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The pulp of claim 1, wherein the polyarenazole fibrous structures are about 25 to 40 weight percent of the total solids.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The pulp of claim 1 having a Canadian Standard Freeness (CSF) of 100 to 700 ml.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The pulp of claim 1, wherein the polyolefin is polypropylene or polyethylene.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The pulp of claim 1, wherein the polyarenazole is a rigid rod polybenzazole or rigid rod polypyridazole polymer.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The pulp of claim 6, wherein the polybenzazole is a polybenzobisoxazole.

### Claim 8 (depends on 6)

The pulp of claim 6, wherein the polypyridazole is a polypyridobisimidazole.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

A filter material comprising the pulp of claim 1 and a binder.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

A fluid sealing material comprising the pulp of claim 1 and a binder selected from the group consisting of nitrile rubber, butadiene rubber, neoprene, styrene butadiene rubber, nitrile-butadiene rubber, and mixtures thereof.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

A thixotrope comprising the pulp of claim 1.

### Claim 12 (depends on 1)

A concrete or masonry material reinforced by the pulp of claim 1.
