## Abstract

A catheter anchoring system is provided to securely anchor to a patient's skin a catheter and fluid supply tube interconnection. The anchoring system comprises a retainer configured to receive a catheter adaptor in a variety of positions. The adaptor interconnects the catheter and the fluid supply tube. In one embodiment the adaptor has a radial recess that circumscribes the adaptor. The anchoring system additionally includes a flexible, adhesive anchor pad which can supports a tube clip, as well as the retainer. The retainer includes a channel that is configured to receive the adaptor in a snap-fit manner. The retainer also includes a plurality of laterally arranged projections that extend from a channel wall and into a channel. Each radial recess is sized to receive and to capture at least a portion of the projection of the retainer so as to inhibit the adaptor from moving within the channel.

## Claims

### Claim 1

An anchoring device for a catheter having an elongated tubular body with an adaptor having an inwardly extending member, the device comprising:
a retainer having a channel section extending along a longitudinal axis of the retainer and configured to receive at least a portion of the adaptor of the catheter, the channel section including a first portion, a second portion, and a third portion, the second portion being disposed between the first and third portions and including at least two projections, the projections extending toward the longitudinal axis in a lateral direction and being configured to engage the inwardly extending member of the adaptor in a manner inhibiting longitudinal motion of the adaptor through the retainer, and a longitudinal slot along said retainer through which the adaptor can pass, the slot having a lateral width less than a diameter of the channel section, wherein a cross section of at least a portion of the channel section tapers along its length; and
a flexible anchor pad having an upper surface upon which the retainer is disposed.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

An anchoring device according to claim 1, wherein the axis of the channel section is disposed at an acute angle relative to the upper surface of the anchor pad.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

An anchoring device according to claim 1, wherein the channel section of the retainer has a truncated circular cross-sectional shape and surrounds at least a portion of said adaptor through an arc of greater than 180 degrees about the longitudinal axis of the channel section when the adaptor is received by the channel section.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

An anchoring device according to claim 1, wherein the channel section has a generally conical shape.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

An anchoring device according to claim 1, wherein the at least two projections of the retainer define a generally annular ring which projects into the channel section toward the longitudinal axis of the retainer.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

An anchoring device according to claim 1, wherein the retainer further comprises a second channel section extending along the longitudinal axis of the retainer, the cross section of the second channel section tapering along its length.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

An anchoring device according to claim 6, wherein the second channel section has a generally circular shape of a radius of curvature generally matching that of a corresponding portion of the catheter adaptor received by the second channel section.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

An anchoring device according to claim 1, wherein each projection being so dimensioned to engage the outwardly extending member of the adaptor to inhibit the catheter from moving in a longitudinal direction.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

An anchoring device according to claim 8, wherein the at least two projections are positioned within the channel section.

### Claim 10 (depends on 8)

An anchoring device according to claim 8, wherein the at least two projections are positioned outside of the channel section.

### Claim 11 (depends on 8)

An anchoring device according to claim 8, wherein the projections are arranged next to each other along the longitudinal axis so as to provide multiple positions along the retainer to receive the catheter adaptor.

### Claim 12

A catheterization system comprising:
a catheter including an adaptor having a body with at least one inwardly extending member; and
a retainer including a channel that extends about a longitudinal axis, the channel generally having a truncated cross-sectional shape with an opening that lies generally parallel to the longitudinal axis, the channel including a first portion, a second portion, and a third portion, the second portion being disposed between the first and third portions and including at least two projections, the projections extending toward the longitudinal axis in a lateral direction and being configured to engage the inwardly extending member of the adaptor in a manner inhibiting longitudinal motion of the adaptor through the retainer, and the channel extending about the longitudinal axis at least to an extent where the channel surrounds at least half of the adaptor body when the adaptor body is disposed within the channel, wherein a cross section of at least a portion of the channel tapers along its length.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

A catheterization system as in claim 12, wherein the adaptor is affixed to a body of the catheter.

### Claim 14 (depends on 12)

A catheterization system as in claim 12, wherein the adaptor is permanently attached to a body of the catheter.

### Claim 15 (depends on 12)

A catheterization system as in claim 12 additionally comprising a flexible anchor pad having an adhesive bottom surface and a top surface on which at least a portion of said retainer is mounted.

### Claim 16 (depends on 12)

A catheterization system as in claim 12, wherein the channel has a generally circular shape of a radius of curvature that generally matches that of a conical shaped portion of the catheter adaptor.

### Claim 17 (depends on 12)

A catheterization system as in claim 12, wherein the catheter adaptor comprises a conical-shaped hub.

### Claim 18 (depends on 12)

A catheterization system as in claim 12, wherein the channel comprises a first channel portion and a second channel portion, said first and second channel portions having generally arcuate shapes of a radius of curvature generally matching that of a corresponding portion of the catheter adaptor received by the respective channel portions.
