## Abstract

A filter system having in-situ scan capabilities is provided. In one embodiment of the invention, the system includes a downstream probe which may be rotated to scan the field of a filter installed in the system. The probe may be utilized for leak detection, velocity measurements, efficiency testing and the like. In one embodiment, one or more probes are rotated downstream of the filter to scan the downstream face of the filter.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A filter system, comprising;
a filter housing;
a scan test housing coupled to the filter housing;
a probe suitable for leak testing disposed in the scan test housing; and
a mechanism for moving the probe in a rotational motion about a centerline of the filter housing while maintaining the probe in a radial orientation relative to the centerline.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The filter system of claim 1, wherein the mechanism for moving the probe further comprises:
an actuator disposed in the scan test housing and coupled to the probe.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The filter system of claim 2, wherein the actuator is a motor.

### Claim 4 (depends on 2)

The filter system of claim 2, wherein the actuator is a rotary cable.

### Claim 5 (depends on 2)

The filter system of claim 2, wherein the actuator is a gear mechanism.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The filter system of claim 5, wherein the gear mechanism further comprises:
a power transmission member coupled to the gear mechanism; and
an aperture formed through the scan test housing adapted to facilitate selective rotation of the power transmission member from an exterior of the scan test housing without leakage from the system.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The filter system of claim 1, further comprising a bag-in, bag-out bag coupled to at least one of the filter housing or the scan test housing.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The filter system of claim 1, further comprising a filter element sealed to the filter housing thereby forming an exterior pressure boundary with the filter housing and the scan test housing.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The filter system of claim 1, wherein the filter housing has a circular cross section.

### Claim 10

A method of scanning a filter, comprising:
flowing air through the filter;
moving a probe in a rotational direction about a centerline of the filter while maintaining the probe in a radial orientation relative to the centerline to scan the filter; and
testing the filter using samples obtained while moving the probe.

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

The method of claim 10, further comprising controlling the moving of the probe without opening a pressure boundary of a containment system in which the filter is mounted.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The method of claim 11, further comprising rotating a shaft extending through an aperture formed through the pressure boundary and thereby controlling the moving.

### Claim 13 (depends on 10)

The method of claim 10, wherein the testing further comprises detecting a filter leak.

### Claim 14 (depends on 10)

The method of claim 10, wherein the testing further comprises detecting a face velocity.

### Claim 15 (depends on 10)

The method of claim 10, wherein moving the probe further comprises:
maintaining the probe in a radial orientation.

### Claim 16 (depends on 10)

The method of claim 10, wherein the filter has a circular cross section.

### Claim 17

A filter system, comprising;
an upstream duct housing;
a filter housing coupled to the upstream duct housing;
a scan test housing coupled to the filter housing;
a probe suitable for leak testing disposed in the scan test housing; and
a mechanism for rotating the probe in a circle that scans an entire face of a filter disposed in the filter housing without opening the scan test housing, wherein the probe is maintained in a radial orientation relative to a centerline of the filter housing.

### Claim 18 (depends on 17)

The filter system of claim 17, wherein the mechanism for moving the probe further comprises:
an actuator disposed in the scan test housing and coupled to the probe.

### Claim 19 (depends on 18)

The filter system of claim 18, wherein the actuator is a motor.

### Claim 20 (depends on 18)

The filter system of claim 18, wherein the actuator is a rotary cable.

### Claim 21 (depends on 18)
