Abstract
The invention provides an opalescent forehearth color concentrate comprising a non-smelted agglomerated interspersion of particles for use in coloring glass, said concentrate comprising by weight from about 10% to about 70% of a glass component and from about 30% to about 90% of one or more opalescent pigments, the glass component comprising by weight from about 10% to about 50% ZnO and about 15 to about 60% SiO2. The invention also provides a method of using the color concentrate.
Claims10
A process for opalizing a molten base glass in the forehearth of a glass furnace comprising:
- a. forming an opalescent concentrate comprising a non-smelted agglomerated interspersion of particles, the concentrate comprising by weight
- i. from about 30% to about 90% of at least one opalescent pigment, and
- ii. from about 10% to about 70% of a glass component;
- b. adding the opalescent concentrate to molten glass contained in a forehearth so as to impart opalescence to the molten glass;
- and
- c. cooling the molten glass to form an opalescent glass composition.
A process for opalizing a molten base glass in the forehearth of a glass furnace comprising:
- a. forming an opalescent concentrate comprising a non-smelted agglomerated interspersion of particles, the concentrate comprising by weight
- i. from about 30 wt % to about 90 wt % of one or more opalescent pigments, and
- ii. from about 10 wt % to about 70 wt % of a glass component, the glass component comprising by weight
- 1. from about 10 wt % to about 50 wt % ZnO,
- 2. about 15 wt % to about 60 wt % SiO2, and
- 3. a crystalline seed material selected from the group consisting of Zn2SiO4, Bi12SiO20, Bi4(SiO4)3, Bi2SiO5, 2ZnO.3TiO2, Bi2O3.SiO2, Bi2O3.2TiO2, 2Bi2O3.3TiO2, Bi7Ti4NbO21, Bi4Ti3O12, Bi2Ti2O7, Bi12TiO20, Bi4Ti3O12, and Bi2Ti4O11,
- b. adding the opalescent concentrate to molten glass contained in a forehearth so as to impart opalescence to the molten glass;
- and
- c. cooling the molten glass to form an opalescent glass composition.
