Abstract
An epicyclical drive having a generally flat, disk shaped flywheel, a flywheel to pinion carrier in the form of an inner hub of the flywheel, and a flywheel support bearing and structure incorporated into the flywheel itself, all of which are concentric about a rotational axis of the flywheel so as to be axially compact, and so as to be particularly well adapted for being located beneath, or incorporated into, the floor of a grain header of an agricultural harvesting machine, for reciprocatingly driving knife knives of a sickle thereof. In particular, the flywheel support bearing is located in an annular space between the inner hub and an outer flange which is rotated by a belt or other drive for rotating the flywheel.

- a pinion shaft supported by the pinion bearing for rotation about the eccentric axis relative to the inner hub, the pinion shaft extending through the passage eccentric to the central axis and including a pinion gear enmeshed with the ring gear, the pinion gear being rotatable about the eccentric axis, and about the ring gear and the central axis when the flywheel is rotated;
- an eccentric element fixedly connected to the pinion shaft so as to rotate about the eccentric axis, and about the ring gear and the central axis with the pinion shaft when the flywheel is rotated;
- a reciprocating element supported in connection with the eccentric element so as to be moved in a reciprocating manner by the rotation of the eccentric element;
- and
- wherein the reciprocating element reciprocatingly drives a first knife assembly of a sickle.
An epicyclic sickle drive, comprising:
- a pair of generally flat, disk shaped flywheels supported in side by side relation by a generally flat frame, for rotation about a first rotational axis and a second rotational axis extending through the flywheels, respectively, each of the flywheels including a radial inner hub, an annular space therearound and a radial outer flange encircling the annular space thereof, the inner hubs, annular spaces and outer flanges being at least generally coplanar;
- a first pinion gear and a second pinion gear supported on pinion shafts in radially offset relation on the radial inner hubs of the flywheels, respectively, for rotation about, and eccentric to, the central rotational axes through the flywheels, respectively, each of the pinion gears being enmeshed with a fixed ring gear so as to rotate about an axis eccentric to the central rotational axis through the flywheel on which the pinion gear is supported;
- a first eccentric element fixedly connected to the first pinion gear so as to rotate therewith, and a first sickle knife assembly supported in connection with the first eccentric element so as to be driven in a reciprocating manner by the rotation of the first eccentric element;
- a second eccentric element fixedly connected to the second pinion gear so as to rotate therewith, and a second sickle knife assembly supported in connection with the second eccentric element so as to be driven in a reciprocating manner by the rotation of the second eccentric element;
- and
