Abstract
A quiet, non-binding collapsible spring mechanism for resiliently supporting a mattress includes a system of collapsible, sinuous springs, each having hooked ends for silencing the mechanism during use or collapse, as well as central offset portions for enabling the sinuous springs to compress to a greater extent than heretofore. Both rigid and yieldable support structures connect the spring mechanism to an item of furniture.
Claims3
A compressible spring, comprising:
- a single length of sinuous wire having a plurality of elongated runs interconnected by arcuate portions,
- an uppermost one of the runs being linear and terminating in a hooked upper end,
- a lowermost one of the runs being linear and terminating in a hooked lower end,
- a central one of the runs being linear and located midway between the uppermost run and the lowermost run,
- an upper additional run being linear and located adjacent the uppermost run between the uppermost run and the central run,
- a lower additional run being linear and located adjacent the lowermost run between the lowermost run and the central run,
- an upper offset run located between the upper additional run and the central run,
- a lower offset run located between the lower additional run and the central run,
- the upper offset run having upper parallel portions and an upper center offset portion located midway of the upper offset run between the upper parallel portions, to enable the upper parallel portions to bypass the central run and the upper additional run when the spring is compressed, and
- the lower offset run having lower parallel portions and a lower center offset portion located midway of the lower offset run between the lower parallel portions, to enable the lower parallel portions to bypass the central run and the lower additional run when the spring is compressed.
