Abstract
Sorbents for removal of mercury and other pollutants from gas streams, such as a flue gas stream from coal-fired utility plants, and methods for their manufacture and use are disclosed. The methods include mixing sorbent substrate particles with a sulfide salt and a metal salt to form a metal sulfide on the outer surface of the sorbent particles.
Claims20
A method of making sorbent particles for the removal of mercury and other pollutants from a gaseous stream comprising:
- mixing a solid metal salt with sorbent substrate particles having an outer surface;
- mixing a sulfide salt with the sorbent substrate particles by grinding, milling or incipient wetness to form a metal sulfide on the outer surface of the particles;
- and
- drying the particles having a metal sulfide on the outer surface.
A sorbent comprising substrate particles containing a metal sulfide formed on the outer surface of the substrate particles by grinding, milling or incipient wetness, the metal sulfide selected from the group consisting of copper sulfide, tin sulfide, manganese sulfide, titanium sulfide, iron sulfide and combinations thereof the sorbent being effective for removal of mercury and other pollutants from a gas stream.
