Abstract
A method for the refining of glass by means of high temperatures in a skull crucible is provided. The method includes introducing a glass melt in the skull crucible through an inlet disposed at an upper region of the skull crucible, heating the skull crucible by irradiation of high-frequency energy, and discharging the glass melt from the skull crucible through an outlet disposed at the upper region, the outlet being disposed at a place essentially lying opposite the inlet.
Claims14
A method for the refining of glass, which is heated by irradiation of high-frequency energy, by means of high temperatures in a skull crucible, comprising:
- introducing a glass melt in a melting-down basin of the skull crucible through an inlet disposed at an upper region of the skull crucible;
- coupling the high-frequency energy into the glass melt of the skull crucible with a high frequency coil to heat the glass melt in the melting-down basin to a temperature of between 1,750 to 3,000° C.;
- discharging the glass melt from the melting-down basin through an outlet disposed at the upper region so that the melt overflows from the melting-down basin into an open top overflow channel, which is in fluid communication with a refining device, the outlet being disposed at a place essentially lying opposite the inlet;
- and
- preventing a short-circuit flow between the inlet and the outlet by increasing a temperature difference between the glass melt introduced at the inlet and the glass melt within the melting-down basin via the high frequency coil.
A method of refining a glass melt comprising:
- heating the glass melt in a first skull crucible to a temperature of between 1,750 to 3,000° C. by irradiating high-frequency energy into the glass melt;
- laterally introducing the glass melt to a first portion of an upper region of said first skull crucible so that the glass melt is refined in said first skull crucible prior to overflowing said first skull crucible at a second portion of said upper region into an overflow channel that is open at the top;
- and
- increasing, via the high frequency coil, a temperature difference between the glass melt introduced to the first portion and the glass melt overflowing at the second portion to prevent a short-circuit flow between the first and second portions.
A method for the refining of glass, which is heated by irradiation of high-frequency energy, by means of high temperatures, comprising:
- providing a skull crucible refining device having an upper crucible part and a lower crucible part, the upper crucible part having a first diameter, an inlet, and an outlet disposed diametrically opposite the inlet, and the lower crucible part having a second smaller diameter;
- laterally introducing a cold crude melt to the inlet of the refining device;
- coupling the high-frequency energy into the lower crucible part of the refining device with a high frequency coil so that the cold crude melt introduced at the inlet is pulled downward from the upper crucible part to a bottom of the lower crucible part then is heated so that a heated crude melt rises to the upper crucible part and forms a refined melt by removing bubbles from the heated crude melt without the cold crude melt being led along directly to the outlet from the inlet at surface of the upper crucible part;
- and
- laterally discharging the refined melt from the outlet.
