Executing functions determined via a collection of operations from translated instructions

A system comprising:

• a translating agent adapted to operate as a component within a processor, and enabled to translate one or more instructions compatible with a reference architecture into a sequence of operations compatible with a target architecture;
• an execution unit within the processor, enabled to carry out a single operation determined from a collection of operations selected from the sequence, the single operation specifying functionality based on at least first and second ones of the instructions compatible with the reference architecture;
• and
• wherein neither the first instruction, nor the second instruction, is a branch instruction,
• wherein the collection of operations is converted into the single operation,
• wherein the collection of operations is replaced with the single operation,
• wherein the collection of operations are selected from the sequence of operations that are included in a window, and
• wherein the size of the window is enlarged when the collection of operations is not found in the window.

A processor comprising:

• means for translating instructions compatible with a reference architecture into a sequence of operations compatible with a target architecture;
• and
• means for executing a fused operation determined from a collection of operations selected from the sequence, the fused operation specifying functionality based on at least first and second ones of the instructions compatible with the reference architecture;
• and
• wherein neither the first instruction, nor the second instruction, is a branch instruction,
• wherein the collection of operations is converted into the fused operation,
• wherein the collection of operations is replaced with the fused operation,
• wherein the collection of operations are selected from the sequence of operations that are included in a window, and
• wherein the size of the window is enlarged when the collection of operations is not found in the window.

A tangible medium readable by a computer system that contains descriptions that specify, when processed by the computer system, a circuit comprising:

• a translating agent sub-circuit enabled to translate one or more instructions compatible with a reference architecture into a sequence of operations compatible with a target architecture;
• an execution unit sub-circuit enabled to carry out a single operation determined from a collection of operations selected from the sequence, the single operation specifying functionality based on at least first and second ones of the instructions compatible with the reference architecture;
• and
• wherein neither the first instruction, nor the second instruction, is a branch instruction,
• wherein the collection of operations is converted into the single operation,
• wherein the collection of operations is replaced with the single operation,
• wherein the collection of operations are selected from the sequence of operations that are included in a window, and
• wherein the size of the window is enlarged when the collection of operations is not found in the window.
