Abstract
A computer implemented method, apparatus, and computer usable program code for preserving a virtual file system. Data for a virtual file system is received. The data include file handle information, vnode information, and gnode information. The data is saved to a storage device. The saved data can be used to reconstruct the virtual file system upon changeover between a primary data processing system and a backup data processing system.
Claims18
A computer implemented method of preserving a virtual file system, the method comprising:
- saving a data describing a virtual file system to a storage device, wherein the data describing the virtual file system is received from a primary data processing system, and wherein the data comprise file handle information, vnode information, and gnode information;
- detecting a changeover from the primary data processing system to a backup data processing system;
- responsive to detecting the changeover, reconstructing the virtual file system in the backup data processing system from the data stored in the storage device,
- wherein saving the data to a storage device comprises:
- saving data for a virtual file system directory to the storage device;
- determining whether the directory has been exported;
- and
- responsive to the directory not being exported, determining whether any changes have been made to the unexported directory;
- responsive to determining that changes have been made to the unexported directory, receiving second data for the unexported directory, wherein the second data comprises file handle information for the unexported directory, vnode information for the unexported directory, and gnode information for the unexported directory, wherein the second data corresponds to changes made to the unexported directory;
- and
- saving the second data to the storage device.
A computer-usable storage medium storing a computer program product comprising computer-usable program code for preserving a virtual file system, the computer program product further comprising:
- computer-usable code for saving a data describing a virtual file system to a storage device, wherein the data describing the virtual file system is received from a primary data processing system, and wherein the data comprise file handle information, vnode information, and gnode information;
- computer-usable code for detecting a changeover from the primary data processing system to a backup data processing system;
- and
- computer-usable code for, responsive to detecting the changeover, reconstructing the virtual file system in the backup data processing system from the data stored in the storage device,
- wherein saving the data to a storage device comprises:
- computer-usable code for saving data for a virtual file system directory to the storage device;
- computer-usable code for determining whether the directory has been exported;
- and
- computer-usable code for, responsive to the directory not being exported, determining whether any changes have been made to the unexported directory;
- computer-usable code for, responsive to determining that changes have been made to the unexported directory, receiving second data for the unexported directory, wherein the second data comprises file handle information for the unexported directory, vnode information for the unexported directory, and gnode information for the unexported directory, wherein the second data corresponds to changes made to the unexported directory;
- and
- computer-usable code for saving the second data to the storage device.
A data processing system comprising:
- a processor;
- a bus connected to the processor;
- a computer-usable storage medium connected to the bus, wherein the computer-usable
- storage medium contains a set of instructions for preserving a virtual file system, wherein the processor is adapted to carry out the set of instructions to:
- save a data describing a virtual file system to a storage device, wherein the data describing the virtual file system is received from a primary data processing system, and wherein the data comprise file handle information, vnode information, and gnode information;
- detect a changeover from the primary data processing system to a backup data processing system;
- and
- responsive to detecting the changeover, reconstruct the virtual file system in the backup data processing system from the data stored in the storage device,
- wherein saving the data to a storage device comprises:
- saving data for a virtual file system directory to the storage device;
- determining whether the directory has been exported;
- and
- responsive to the directory not being exported, determining whether any changes have been made to the unexported directory;
- responsive to determining that changes have been made to the unexported directory, receiving second data for the unexported directory, wherein the second data comprises file handle information for the unexported directory, vnode information for the unexported directory, and gnode information for the unexported directory, wherein the second data corresponds to changes made to the unexported directory;
- and
- saving the second data to the storage device.
