Abstract
Hair follicle stem cells are isolated from mammals by isolating nestin-expressing cells. These hair follicle stem cells are a source of adult stem cells for autologous or heterologous stem cell therapy. The stem cells can be systemically implanted into the mammal or directly implanted into the organ. In addition, the stem cells may be further differentiated in vitro and then implanted systemically or directly into the mammal.
Claims5
A method to isolate mouse hair follicle stem cells, which method comprises providing individual hair follicles from transgenic mice whose genome comprises a nucleotide sequence encoding a fluorescent protein under the control of nestin control sequences, and isolating cells producing the fluorescent protein from the bulge area of the hair follicle immediately below the sebaceous gland during the telogen phase or early anagen phase.
