1. Field of the Invention
The present invention relates generally to the field of cotton breeding. In particular, the invention relates to the novel cotton variety ST 5283RF.
2. Description of Related Art
The invention provides, in one aspect, methods and composition relating to plants, seeds and derivatives of the cotton variety ST 5283RF. The cotton variety ST 5283RF has been judged to be uniform for breeding purposes and testing. The variety can be reproduced by planting and growing seeds of the variety under self-pollinating or sib-pollinating conditions, as is known to those of skill in the agricultural arts. Variety ST 5283RF shows no variants other than what would normally be expected due to environment or that would occur for almost any characteristic during the course of repeated sexual reproduction.
ST 5283RF was derived from an initial backcross-breeding program with the experimental line 8S093 (ST468/SG501) as the recurrent parent. BC3F2 plants were grown in Memphis, Tenn. and screened for the presence of a Roundup Ready Flex™ transgene conferring glyphosate tolerance. Seed from the individual plants was planted in South Africa as BC3F3 progeny rows. The progeny rows were screened for homozygosity.
At maturity, the BC3F3 progeny rows were evaluated for agronomic characteristics. Individual plants and a bulk were harvested from the selected rows. Seed from the individual plants were grown as progeny rows in Stoneville, Miss. and evaluated for purity of the transgenes and agronomic traits while the bulk seed was used to conduct replicated trials and evaluation of yield, fiber traits, and visual agronomic comparisons of the selected rows versus the recurrent parent. ST 5283RF was evaluated in many environments across the cotton belt. No off-types were detected and no variants were noted in the variety.
