## Abstract

A method of mode selective coupling or mode multiplexing between integrated multimode (600) and single mode (602) waveguides. Evanescent coupling and tapering is used so that the signal may be transferred adiabatically from a first region of a first waveguide to a second, proximal, region of a second waveguide.

## Claims

### Claim 1

An apparatus to transfer a signal from a first mode of a first waveguide to a second mode of second waveguide, the apparatus comprising first and second waveguides, wherein the second waveguide is aligned substantially along said first waveguide, an initial portion of said second waveguide located at an initial distance from the first waveguide so as not to affect any mode in the first waveguide, and wherein the distance between the second waveguide and the first waveguide gradually decreases to a mode interaction region, thereby enabling adiabatic transfer of a signal carried by a first mode of said first waveguide to a second mode of said second waveguide having the same direction of propagation as said first mode, without affecting any other signal carried by any other mode of said first and second waveguides or any counter-propagating signal, wherein said adiabatic transfer of said signal is irrespective of operation wavelength of the signal.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The apparatus of claim 1, wherein at least at said mode interaction region the absolute value of the difference between the effective index of refraction of said first mode and the effective index of refraction of said second mode is sufficiently small to enable said adiabatic transfer of said signal from said first mode of said first waveguide to said second mode of said second waveguide.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the minimum transverse distance between said first and second waveguides at said mode interaction region is between approximately one half wavelength and approximately ten wavelengths of a propagating electromagnetic field carrying said signal.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said first waveguide is capable of accommodating a greater number of modes than said second waveguide and wherein said first mode is a highest order mode of the first waveguide.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The apparatus of claim 4, wherein at least at said mode interaction region the absolute value of the difference between the effective index of refraction for the first mode at said first waveguide and the effective index of refraction for the second mode of said second waveguide is less than the absolute value of the difference between the effective index of refraction for the highest-order mode of the first waveguide and the effective index of refraction of the next-highest-order mode of the first waveguide.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The apparatus of claim 5, wherein said second waveguide is a single-mode waveguide, and wherein said second mode is a fundamental mode of the second waveguide.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said second waveguide is capable of accommodating a greater number of modes than said first waveguide and wherein said second mode is a highest order mode of the second waveguide.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The apparatus of claim 7, wherein at least at said mode interaction region the absolute value of the difference between the effective index of refraction for the first mode of said first waveguide and the effective index of refraction for the second mode of the second waveguide is less than the absolute value of the difference between the effective index of refraction for the highest-order mode of the second waveguide and the effective index of refraction of a next-highest-order mode of the second waveguide.

### Claim 9 (depends on 7)

The apparatus of claim 7, wherein said first waveguide is a single-mode waveguide and wherein said first mode is a fundamental mode of the first waveguide.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The apparatus of claim 1, wherein at least one property of at least one of said first and second waveguides changes adiabatically in the vicinity of said mode interaction region.

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

The apparatus of claim 10, wherein said at least one property is at least one dimension of said first waveguide transverse to the direction of propagation of said signal.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The apparatus of claim 11, wherein said at least one dimension is changed along a length in the direction of propagation of said signal equal to at least 100 times the change in said dimension.

### Claim 13 (depends on 10)

The apparatus of claim 10, wherein said at least one property is a dimension of said second waveguide transverse to the direction of propagation of said signal.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

The apparatus of claim 13, wherein said at least one dimension is changed along a length in the direction of propagation of said signal equal to at least 100 times the change in said dimension.

### Claim 15 (depends on 10)

The apparatus of claim 10, wherein said at least one property further includes a dimension of said first waveguide transverse to the direction of propagation of said signal.

### Claim 16 (depends on 10)

The apparatus of claim 10, wherein said at least one property is an index of refraction of at least one of said first and second waveguides.
