## Abstract

A method of operating a mobile wireless network is described to ensure proper function of protocol entities during the transmission of data units between two wireless stations of the mobile wireless network. In this case, user data is assembled by a first convergence protocol layer of the first wireless station into at least one first data unit, particularly a packet data unit, before transmission to a second convergence protocol layer of a second wireless station, particularly on the same protocol level, with the user data being supplied to the first convergence protocol layer by at least one user in a network layer. At least one protocol entity of the first convergence protocol layer is configured as a function of a configuration request received by the second wireless station, in order to form the at least one first data unit from the data received from the at least one user and to transmit it through a carrier to a link control layer.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method of operating a mobile wireless network, comprising:
configuring at least one protocol entity of a first convergence protocol layer of a first wireless station as a function of a configuration request received from a second wireless station, wherein the configuring includes specifying multiplexing properties to define at least one user, and wherein the data units of the at least one user are assembled by the at least one protocol entity from the respective received user data before transmitting, in a multiplexed manner, to the link control layer via the carrier;
supplying user data to the first convergence protocol layer by at least one user in a network layer;
assembling the user data into at least one first data unit by the at least one protocol entity of the first convergence protocol layer, wherein the at least one first data unit is assembled before a transmission to a second convergence protocol layer of the second wireless station;
transmitting the at least one first data unit to a link control layer via a carrier; and
transmitting, from the first wireless station to the second wireless station, a communication indicating which settings of the at least one protocol entity are supported by the first wireless station before receiving the configuration request from the second wireless station.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein the configuring includes:
specifying at least one compression algorithm for compressing one of protocol control data for the transmission of the at least one first data unit and the user data, wherein the at least one compression algorithm corresponds to a decompression algorithm in the second wireless station for decompressing one of protocol control data and user data.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The method according to claim 2, wherein the specifying includes:
specifying at least one compression parameter along with the specification of the at least one compression algorithm, wherein the compression parameter is also being used for decompression in the second wireless station.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method according claim 1, further comprising the step of:
setting up the carrier, via which the user data are transmitted from the protocol entity to the link control layer.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, further comprising:
specifying, using the configuration request, at least one selection of alternative settings for the protocol entity that are supported by the second wireless station.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The method according to claim 5, further comprising:
transmitting, from the first wireless station to the second wireless station, a confirmation signal, in which the setting selected and performed by the first wireless station is communicated.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, further comprising:
permanently specifying at least one setting for the at least one protocol entity using the configuration request.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein the configuring includes:
specifying a protocol entity identity (ID), through which the protocol entity is referenceable, during the configuration.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The method according to claim 8, wherein the protocol entity ID is specified so, that it corresponds to an ID of the carrier assigned to it.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein the communication is transmitted to the second wireless station together with a message about the capabilities and the output range of the first wireless station.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, further comprising:
establishing the at least one protocol entity using the configuration request.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The method according to claim 11, further comprising:
modifying and reconfiguring settings of the established at least one protocol entity using the configuration request.

### Claim 13 (depends on 11)

The method according to claim 11, further comprising:
releasing the established at least one protocol entity using the configuration request.

### Claim 14 (depends on 6)

The method according to claim 6, further comprising:
inserting the configuration request into a carrier configuration message for the case in which the carrier is established, reconfigured and released by using the carrier configuration message.

### Claim 15 (depends on 14)

The method according to claim 14, further comprising:
acknowledging, by the first wireless station, one of the establishment and the reconfiguration of the carrier by inserting a confirmation signal into a message.

### Claim 16 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, further comprising:
transmitting, from the second wireless station to the first wireless station, the configuration request containing the protocol entity settings supported by the first wireless station after having received the communication from the first wireless station.
