## Abstract

This invention relates to newly identified polynucleotides and polypeptides in the phytic acid biosynthetic pathway, variants and derivatives of same; methods for making the polynucleotides, polypeptides, variants, derivatives and antagonists. In particular the invention relates to polynucleotides and polypeptides of the inositol polyphosphate kinase gene family. In particular this invention relates to using the newly identified polynucleotides and polypeptides to modulate phytic acid biosynthesis in such a way as to decrease phytate and/or increase non-phytate phosphorous in plants.

## Claims

### Claim 1

An isolated nucleic acid comprising a member selected from the group consisting of:
(a) a polynucleotide which encodes the polypeptide of SEQ ID NO: 2;
(b) a polynucleotide having the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 1; and
(c) a polynucleotide complementary to the full length of the polynucleotide of (a) or (b).

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

An expression cassette comprising at least one nucleic acid of claim 1 operably linked to a promoter.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

A non-human host cell containing at least one expression cassette of claim 2.

### Claim 4 (depends on 2)

A transgenic plant comprising at least one expression cassette of claim 2.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

A seed from the transgenic plant of claim 4 wherein the seed comprises the expression cassette.

### Claim 6 (depends on 2)

A method for modulating inositol polyphosphate kinase (IPPK) activity or levels in a plant, comprising:
(a) transforming a plant cell with at least one expression cassette of claim 2; and
(b) growing the transformed host cell under conditions sufficient to modulate IPPK activity in the plant.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

A plant produced by the method of claim 6.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The transgenic plant of claim 7, wherein the plant is corn.

### Claim 9 (depends on 6)

The plant of the method of claim 6 wherein the level of phytate in the plant is reduced.

### Claim 10 (depends on 6)

The plant of the method of claim 6 wherein the level of non-phytate phosphorous in the plant is increased.
