## Abstract

A vasoocclusive coil is reinforced with a stretch resistant member to improve safety during retraction of the coil. The stretch resistant member is fixedly attached at one end to the vasoocclusive coil, and the other end of the stretch resistant member is detachably mounted to an elongated pusher member to allow for placement and release of the vasoocclusive coil within the patient's vasculature.

## Claims

### Claim 1

An apparatus for release and deployment of a stretch resistant therapeutic device within a patient's vasculature, comprising:
a vasoocclusive coil having a proximal end and a distal end, said vasoocclusive coil defining a lumen having a length between said proximal and distal ends;
an elongated pusher member having a distal end adjacent to said proximal end of said vasoocclusive coil;
a connector fiber detachably mounting the vasoocclusive coil to the pusher member for placement of the vasoocclusive coil within the vasculature, wherein said connector fiber can be severed by heating of the connector fiber;
a loop attached at the proximal end of the coil as a socket, said loop detachably mounting said vasoocclusive coil to the distal end of the pusher member;
an electrical resistance heater wire disposed adjacent to said connector fiber, said electrical resistance wire being connected to a control unit for heating and thereby severing said connector fiber; and
a stretch resistant member extending throughout the length of said lumen of said vasoocclusive coil, said stretch resistant member having a first end and a free second end, said stretch resistant member being doubled and forming a loop at said free second end, said stretch resistant member only being fixedly attached to said vasoocclusive coil at said first end to said distal end of said vasoocclusive coil, and said connector fiber extending through said loop of said stretch resistant member to detachably connect said stretch resistant member to the distal end of the elongated pusher member to allow for placement of the vasoocclusive coil within the patient's vasculature.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said stretch resistant member is formed of a ribbon.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said stretch resistant member is formed of a wire.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said stretch resistant member is formed of a braid.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said stretch resistant member is formed of a primary wind.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said stretch resistant member is formed of a stranded material.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said stretch resistant member is a fiber formed from a polymer.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said stretch resistant member is a fiber formed from a polymer selected from the group consisting of an ethylene-octene copolymer, polypropylene, and polyethylene.

### Claim 9 (depends on 7, 8)

The apparatus of claim 7 or 8, wherein the vasoocclusive coil is attached to the first end of the stretch resistant member by heating of the end of the fiber.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said stretch resistant member is formed from a metal.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said stretch resistant member is formed from platinum.

### Claim 12 (depends on 1)

The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said stretch resistant member is radiopaque.

### Claim 13 (depends on 1)

The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said connector fiber comprises at least one loop of fiber material attached to the pusher member.

### Claim 14 (depends on 1)

The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said connector fiber is formed from a thermoplastic material.

### Claim 15 (depends on 1)

The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said connector fiber is formed from polyethylene.
