Abstract
A highly reliable, carrier class passive optical network and associated devices which employs multiple instances of operating software in host systems, as well as mechanisms to automatically determine whether an individual OLT device has entered or left the system without disruption to overall system operation.
Claims19
A highly reliable, carrier-class passive optical network system (PON) comprising:
- a host system including at least two instances of operating software (iROS-SC) wherein only one of the instances is active at a given time and the remaining instances are in a standby mode;
- one or more optical line terminator (OLT) devices, said OLT devices including an instance of operating software (iROS-OLT) wherein said iROS-OLT is in communication with iROS-SC via a management channel;
- and
- a plurality of optical network units (ONUs), connected to said OLT by a passive optical network, said ONUs including an instance of operating software (iROS-ONU) in communication with an instance of iROS-OLT via the passive optical network.
In a highly reliable, carrier-class passive optical network system (PON) comprising a host system including at least two instances of operating software (iROS-SC) wherein only one of the instances is active at a given time and the remaining instances are in a standby mode;
- one or more optical line terminator (OLT) devices, said OLT devices including an instance of operating software (iROS-OLT) wherein said iROS-OLT is in communication with iROS-SC via a management channel;
- and a plurality of optical network units (ONUs), connected to said OLT by a passive optical network, said ONUs including an instance of operating software (iROS-ONU) in communication with an instance of iROS-OLT via the passive optical network, a method of operating said passive optical network, said method comprising the steps of:
- determining whether the active instance of operating software iROS-SC is functioning correctly;
- and
- promoting a remaining instance of iROS-SC to active mode as a result of said correctly-functioning determination.
