Abstract
An inbred corn line, designated BC5, is disclosed. The invention relates to the seeds of inbred corn line BC5, to the plants and plant parts of inbred corn line BC5 and to methods for producing a corn plant, either inbred or hybrid, by crossing the inbred line BC5 with itself or another corn line. The invention further relates to methods for producing a corn plant containing in its genetic material one or more transgenes and to the transgenic plants produced by that method and to methods for producing other inbred corn lines derived from the inbred BC5.
Claims28
A seed of corn inbred line designated BC5, wherein a representative sample of seed of said line was deposited under ATCC Accession No. PTA-9606.
A corn plant, or a part thereof, having all the physiological and morphological characteristics of the inbred line BC5, wherein a representative sample of seed of said line was deposited under ATCC Accession No. PTA-9606.
A method for producing inbred line BC5, wherein a representative sample of seed of said line was deposited under ATCC Accession No. PTA-9606, wherein the method comprises:
- a) planting a collection of seed comprising seed of a hybrid, one of whose parents is inbred line BC5, said collection also comprising seed of said inbred;
- b) growing plants from said collection of seed;
- c) identifying the plants having the physiological and morphological characteristics of corn inbred line BC5 as inbred parent plants;
- d) controlling pollination of said inbred parent plants in a manner which preserves the homozygosity of said inbred parent plant;
- and
- e) harvesting the resultant seed.
A method of introducing a desired trait into corn inbred line BC5 wherein the method comprises:
- a) crossing the inbred line BC5 plants grown from the inbred line BC5 seed, wherein a representative sample of seed of said line was deposited under ATCC Accession No. PTA-9606, with plants of another corn line that comprise at least one trait to produce progeny plants, wherein said at least one trait is selected from the group consisting of male sterility, male fertility, herbicide resistance, insect resistance, disease resistance, waxy starch, water stress tolerance, increased amylose starch and increased digestibility;
- b) selecting progeny plants that have said at least one trait to produce selected progeny plants;
- c) crossing the selected progeny plants with the inbred line BC5 plants to produce backcross progeny plants;
- d) selecting for backcross progeny plants that have said at least one trait and physiological and morphological characteristics of corn inbred line BC5 listed in Table 1 to produce selected backcross progeny plants;
- and
- e) repeating steps (c) and (d) three or more times in succession to produce selected fourth or higher backcross progeny plants that comprise said at least one trait and the physiological and morphological characteristics of corn inbred line BC5 as listed in Table 1.
Hybrid corn plant having inbred line BC5 or a transgenic inbred line of BC5 as a parental line of said hybrid, wherein a representative sample of seed of BC5 was deposited under ATCC Accession No. PTA-9606, and wherein the transgenic inbred line BC5 or a second parental line comprises a transgene that confers a trait selected from the group consisting of disease resistance, male sterility, herbicide resistance, and insect resistance.
A method of introducing a desired trait into corn inbred line BC5 wherein the method comprises:
- a) crossing an inbred line BC5 plant grown from the inbred line BC5 seed, wherein a representative sample of seed of said line was deposited under ATCC Accession No. PTA-9606, with a donor corn plant comprising a mutant gene or transgene conferring a desired trait;
- b) selecting an F1 progeny plant comprising the mutant gene or transgene conferring the desired trait;
- c) crossing the selected F1 progeny plants with the inbred line BC5 plants to produce backcross progeny plants;
- and
- d) repeating steps (b) and (c) three or more times in succession to produce selected fourth or higher backcross progeny plants that comprise the mutant gene or transgene conferring the desired trait.
A method of introducing a desired trait into corn inbred line BC5 wherein the method comprises:
- a. obtaining a molecular marker profile of corn inbred line BC5;
- b. crossing an inbred line BC5 plant grown from the inbred line BC5 seed, wherein a representative sample of seed of said line was deposited under ATCC Accession No. PTA-9606, with a donor corn plant comprising a mutant gene or transgene conferring a desired trait;
- c. using the molecular marker profile of corn inbred line BC5 to select an F1 progeny plant with the desired trait and the molecular marker profile of corn inbred line BC5;
- d. crossing the selected F1 progeny plants with the inbred line BC5 plants to produce backcross progeny plants;
- and
- e. repeating steps (b) and (c) three or more times in succession to produce selected fourth or higher backcross progeny plants that comprise the mutant gene or transgene conferring the desired trait.
