Abstract
A fuel additive composition comprising a solution or dispersion of an oil soluble metal carboxylate or metal complex derived from a compound of the formula: where R1, R2, R3 and R4 represent hydrogen or a hydrocarbyl having 1-30 carbon atoms (C1-C30), but at least two of R1, R2, R3 or R4 are C1-C30 hydrocarbyl; R5 is a hydrocarbyl having 1 to 120 carbon atoms and m and n may each be zero or an integer such that the total number of carbon atoms in the carboxylate is not more than 125.

A method of improving the operation of a diesel engine equipped with a trap for particulate emissions in the diesel engine exhaust comprising:
- providing a diesel fuel to the engine comprising a solution or dispersion of an oil soluble metal neocarboxylate or metal complex derived from a compound of the formula:
- where R1 and R2 are a hydrocarbyl having 1-30 carbon atoms, R3 and R4 represent hydrogen or a hydrocarbyl having 1-30 carbon atoms;
- R5 is a hydrocarbyl having 1 to 120 carbon atoms and m and n may each be zero or an integer such that the total number of carbon atoms in the neocarboxylate is not more than 125, the solution comprising 20-80% by weight of the neocarboxylate or complex and 80-20% by weight of a hydrocarbon solvent.
