Abstract
A method of culturing tissue comprises growing tissue forming cells whilst subjecting the tissue forming cells to mechanical stresses which are generated magnetically.
Claims22
A method of mechanically stimulating cells for tissue engineering applications, comprising:
- (a) culturing tissue-forming cells in the presence of a magnetic material, the magnetic material being capable of generating a force in response to an applied magnetic field and transmitting the force to the tissue-forming cells, wherein the magnetic material comprises a ferrofluid;
- and
- (b) applying a magnetic field to the magnetic material, whereby mechanical stress is applied to the tissue-forming cells by means of linear translational motion of the magnetic material in response to the applied magnetic field.
A method of mechanically stimulating cells for tissue engineering applications, comprising:
- (a) culturing tissue-forming cells in the presence of an exogenous magnetic material, the magnetic material being capable of generating a force in response to an applied magnetic field and transmitting the force to the tissue-forming cells;
- and
- (b) applying a magnetic field to the magnetic material, whereby mechanical stress is applied to the tissue-forming cells by means of linear translational motion of the magnetic material in response to the applied magnetic field, and wherein the method is applied in vivo to grow tissue in situ within a patient's body.
A method of mechanically stimulating cells for tissue engineering applications, comprising:
- (a) culturing tissue-forming cells in the presence of an exogenous magnetic material, the magnetic material being capable of generating a force in response to an applied magnetic field and transmitting the force to the tissue-forming cells, wherein the magnetic material is attached to the tissue-forming cells;
- and
- (b) applying a magnetic field to the magnetic material, whereby mechanical stress is applied to the tissue-forming cells by means of linear translational motion of the magnetic material in response to the applied magnetic field.
