## Abstract

A multi-component lacrosse stick head, made of at least two materials, including a base lacrosse head structure of one material and one or more overlays made of one or more other materials strategically located on the base structure. The base structure and overlays provide particular performance characteristics for the lacrosse head. An embodiment of the invention includes a base lacrosse head structure, and at least one of a ball stop overlay, a sidewall overlay, an edge overlay, a thread opening overlay, and a scoop overlay. The overlays are affixed to the base lacrosse head structure by, for example, insert molding, over molding, reaction injection molding, spray application, rotational molding, dual extrusion, casting, or an interference fit.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method for making a lacrosse stick head comprising:
injecting a first plastic material into a first mold to form a base lacrosse head structure comprising
a stop member,
a first sidewall connected to the stop member,
a second sidewall connected to the stop member, and
a scoop connected to the first sidewall and the second sidewall opposite to the stop member,
the scoop having a top surface on a ball-receiving side of the lacrosse stick head and an underside surface opposite the top surface, and
the stop member, the first sidewall, the second sidewall, and the scoop defining a pocket area;
removing the base lacrosse head structure from the first mold;
inserting the base lacrosse head structure into a second mold;
placing the second mold in contact with a face of one of the stop member, the first sidewall, the second sidewall, and the top surface of the scoop,
wherein the second mold defines an interior cavity over the face,
the face facing the pocket area, and
the interior cavity formed over only a first portion of the face, a second portion of the face contacting the second mold,
injecting a second plastic material into the interior cavity of the second mold to form an overlay adhered to the first portion of the face; and
removing the base lacrosse head structure from the second mold, wherein the second portion of the face comprises exposed base lacrosse head structure and wherein the overlay adhered to the first portion comprises an isolated application that is adjacent to the exposed base lacrosse head structure of the second portion, such that the face is not completely covered by the overplay.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising:
forming a recess in the first portion of the face; and
injecting the second material into the recess.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, further comprising forming the recess in the first portion of the face using the first mold.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the second plastic material comprises one of thermoplastic elastomer and thermosetting elastomer.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the interior cavity comprises a continuous series of cavities.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the interior cavity is a first interior cavity, wherein the overlay is a first overlay, wherein the second mold defines a second interior cavity independent from the first interior cavity, wherein the second interior cavity is formed over a third portion of the face, and the method further comprises injecting the second plastic material into the second interior cavity to form a second overlay adhered to the third portion of the face, wherein the first overlay and the second overlay are isolated from each other.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising forming thread openings in the base lacrosse head structure with the first mold.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising attaching a shaft to the base lacrosse head structure.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising attaching a pocket to the base lacrosse head structure.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, the overlay having a hardness value less than that of the base lacrosse head structure.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising forming thread openings in the overlay.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The method of claim 11, wherein the thread openings are formed with the second mold.

### Claim 13 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, the second mold defining a second interior cavity over an exterior face of the first sidewall, the exterior face on a side of the first sidewall opposite to the pocket area, the method further comprising injecting the second plastic material into the second interior cavity to form a second overlay adhered to the exterior face of the first sidewall.

### Claim 14 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising:
forming with the first mold a first thread opening through the face of the base lacrosse head structure; and
forming with the second mold a second thread opening through the overlay aligned with the first thread opening.

### Claim 15 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising forming the overlay proximate to a thread opening in the base lacrosse head structure, the overlay configured to compress underneath a pocket thread.

### Claim 16 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising forming the overlay within a thread opening in the base lacrosse head structure, the overlay configured to compress underneath a pocket thread.

### Claim 17 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the first plastic material is different from the second plastic material.

### Claim 18 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising forming ridges in the overlay with the second mold.

### Claim 19 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising forming the overlay as a rib with the second mold.

### Claim 20

A method for making a lacrosse stick head comprising:
forming a base lacrosse head structure comprising
a stop member,
a first sidewall connected to the stop member,
a second sidewall connected to the stop member, and
a scoop connected to the first sidewall and the second sidewall opposite to the stop member, and
the stop member, the first sidewall, the second sidewall, and the scoop defining a pocket area and each having an interior face facing the pocket area;
inserting the base lacrosse head structure into a mold;
placing the mold in contact with the interior face of one of the stop member, the first sidewall, the second sidewall, and the scoop, the mold defining an interior cavity over the interior face, the interior cavity formed over only a first portion of the interior face, a second portion of the interior face contacting the second mold;
injecting a plastic material into the interior cavity of the mold to form an overlay adhered to the first portion of the interior face, the overlay having a hardness value less than that of the base lacrosse head structure; and
removing the base lacrosse head structure from the mold, wherein the second portion of the interior face comprises exposed base lacrosse head structure and wherein the overlay adhered to the first portion comprises an isolated application that is adjacent to the exposed base lacrosse head structure of the second portion, such that the interior face is not completely covered by the overlay.
