A method of calibrating a photonic integrated circuit having a plurality of signal channels, each of the plurality of signal channels including a laser source, an electro-optic modulator, a semiconductor optical amplifier, and an output, wherein for each of the plurality of signal channels, the method comprises:
- measuring an output power value of a respective laser source;
- measuring an operational wavelength of the respective laser source;
- comparing the measured operational wavelength with a predetermined operational wavelength to generate an operational wavelength offset value;
- generating calibration data, the calibration data including the output power value of the respective laser source and the operational wavelength offset value;
- adjusting the operational wavelength of the respective laser source to be substantially equal to the predetermined operational wavelength;
- adjusting the output power of a respective output by adjusting a gain of a respective semiconductor optical amplifier;
- updating the calibration data to include a first value representative of the adjusted operational wavelength and a second value representative of the adjusted output power of the respective output;
- and
- storing the updated calibration data.
