Transparent relocation of an active redundant engine in supervisory process control data acquisition systems

A method for maintaining transparency between fail-over host partners for data acquisition clients of a redundancy-enabled host in a supervisory process control data acquisition application runtime environment, the method comprising the steps:

• maintaining a name resolution table including a set of entries, each entry including a name and a corresponding network address, for mapping location-independent reference names to network location-specific addresses for named entities;
• creating a single entry in the name resolution table including a location-independent reference name and a network address, the single entry corresponding to the redundancy-enabled host comprising both an active host partner and a standby host partner;
• and
• providing a messaging infrastructure for a client of the redundancy-enabled host, wherein the messaging infrastructure locally maintains a location-independent reference name-to-network address translation, based upon the single entry in the name resolution table, for resolving location-independent reference names of the client to data sources on the redundancy-enabled host, and wherein a single location-independent reference name is used by the client to reference data on the redundancy-enabled host treated as a single named entity and without regard to which partner of the redundancy-enabled host is presently active.
