Abstract
A magnetic storage system comprises a read element and an electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection circuit that communicates with the read element and that includes a normally-on transistor that shorts the read element when the magnetic storage system is unpowered.

A magnetic storage system, comprising:
- a read element comprising:
- a first terminal;
- and
- a second terminal;
- and
- an electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection circuit that includes a normally-on transistor that is directly coupled to said first terminal and said second terminal and that shorts said read element when said magnetic storage system is unpowered.

- a read element;
- and
- an electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection circuit that communicates with said read element and that includes a normally-on transistor that shorts said read element when said magnetic storage system is unpowered,
- wherein said ESD protection circuit includes a first voltage limiting circuit that limits voltage that is input to first terminals of said normally-on transistor and said read element.
