Abstract
An inbred corn line, designated MN5, is disclosed. The invention relates to the seeds of inbred corn line MN5, to the plants and plant parts of inbred corn line MN5 and to methods for producing a corn plant, either inbred or hybrid, by crossing the inbred line MN5 with itself or another corn line. The invention further relates to methods for producing a corn plant containing in its genetic material one or more transgenes and to the transgenic plants produced by that method and to methods for producing other inbred corn lines derived from the inbred MN5.
Claims27
A seed of corn inbred line designated MN5, wherein a representative sample of seed of said line was deposited under ATCC Accession No. PTA-9050.
A method for producing inbred line MN5, wherein a representative sample of seed of said line was deposited under ATCC Accession No. PTA-9050, wherein the method comprises:
- a) planting a collection of seed comprising seed of a hybrid, one of whose parents is inbred line MN5, said collection also comprising seed of said inbred;
- b) growing plants from said collection of seed;
- c) identifying the plants having the physiological and morphological characteristics of corn inbred line MN5 as inbred parent plants;
- d) controlling pollination of said inbred parent plants in a manner which preserves the homozygosity of said inbred parent plant;
- and
- e) harvesting the resultant seed.
A method of introducing a desired trait into corn inbred line MN5 wherein the method comprises:
- a) crossing the inbred line MN5 plants grown from the inbred line MN5 seed, wherein a representative sample of seed of said line was deposited under ATCC Accession No. PTA-9050, with plants of another corn line that comprise a desired trait to produce progeny plants, wherein the desired trait is selected from the group consisting of male sterility, male fertility, herbicide resistance, insect resistance, disease resistance, waxy starch, water stress tolerance, increased amylose starch and increased digestibility;
- b) selecting progeny plants that have the desired trait to produce selected progeny plants;
- c) crossing the selected progeny plants with the inbred line MN5 plants to produce backcross progeny plants;
- d) selecting for backcross progeny plants that have the desired trait and physiological and morphological characteristics of corn inbred line MN5 listed in Table 1 to produce selected backcross progeny plants;
- and
- e) repeating steps (c) and (d) three or more times in succession to produce selected fourth or higher backcross progeny plants that comprise the desired trait and the physiological and morphological characteristics of corn inbred line MN5 as listed in Table 1.
Hybrid corn seed designated CB1*MN5 having inbred line MN5 or a transgenic inbred line of MN5 as a parental line, wherein a representative sample of seed of MN5 was deposited under ATCC Accession No. PTA-9050, and having inbred line CB1 or a transgenic inbred line of CB1 as a parental line, wherein a representative sample of seed of CB1 was deposited under NCIMB No. 41375, wherein the transgenic inbred line MN5 or CB1 comprises a transgene that confers a trait selected from the group consisting of disease resistance, male sterility, herbicide resistance, and insect resistance.
Hybrid corn seed designated KW4773*MN5 having inbred line MN5 or a transgenic inbred line of MN5 as a parental line, wherein a representative sample of seed of MN5 was deposited under ATCC Accession No. PTA-9050, and having inbred line KW4773 or a transgenic inbred line of KW4773 as a parental line, wherein a representative sample of seed of KW47731 was deposited under ATCC Accession No. PTA-5307, wherein the transgenic inbred line MN5 or KW4773 comprises a transgene that confers a trait selected from the group consisting of disease resistance, male sterility, herbicide resistance, and insect resistance.
