Abstract
The invention pertains to a method of inactivating prions located on surfaces. In an embodiment, the invention pertains to a method of inactivating prions located on surfaces using a composition including a peracid. In an embodiment, the invention pertains to a method of inactivating prions located on surfaces using a composition including a peracid and a surfactant. The composition may comprise additional functional ingredients.
Claims4
A method of inactivating a prion located on a surface comprising:
- applying to the surface a composition consisting of:
- a peracid precursor consisting of acetic acid and octanoic acid;
- hydrogen peroxide;
- peracetic acid;
- peroctanoic acid;
- a nonionic surfactant;
- a chelating agent;
- water;
- and optionally an additional functional ingredient, wherein the peracid concentration at equilibrium in the composition is about 20 ppm to about 200 ppm;
- and
- maintaining the composition at least about 30° C. for at least about 1 minute,
- the composition being effective at inactivating a prion capable of causing a brain disease selected from the group consisting of kuru, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, Gerstmann-Straussler-Scheiniker disease, fatal familial insomnia, scrapie, bovine spongiform encephalopathy, transmissible mink encephalopathy, chronic wasting disease, and feline spongiform encephalopathy, and
- the composition being capable of decreasing the number of the prions in a container by at least about 3 logs.

A method of treating a surface comprising:
- applying to the surface a composition consisting of:
- a peracid precursor consisting of acetic acid and octanoic acid;
- hydrogen peroxide;
- peracetic acid;
- peroctanoic acid;
- a nonionic surfactant;
- a chelating agent;
- and
- water;
- wherein the peracid concentration at equilibrium in the composition is about 20 ppm to about 200 ppm and
- maintaining the composition at least about room temperature for at least about 1 minute,
- the composition being effective at inactivating a prion capable of causing a brain disease selected from the group consisting of kuru, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, Gerstmann-Straussler-Scheiniker disease, fatal familial insomnia, scrapie, bovine spongiform encephalopathy, transmissible mink encephalopathy, chronic wasting disease, and feline spongiform encephalopathy, and the composition being capable of decreasing the number of the prions in a container by at least about 1.5 logs.
