Abstract
The present invention provides methods of screening for the presence of premalignant melanocytes in a sample from a patient. The methods comprise contacting a nucleic acid sample from a biological sample from the patient with a probe which binds selectively to a target polynucleotide sequence on a chromosomal region which is amplified in melanoma cells.
Claims13
A method of screening for the presence of a cutaneous melanoma having an increase in copy number at 11q13, the method comprising:
- contacting a nucleic acid sample comprising genomic DNA from a sample suspected of comprising the melanoma with a probe that binds selectively to a target polynucleotide sequence on chromosomal region 11q13, wherein the probe is contacted with the sample under conditions in which the probe binds selectively with the target polynucleotide sequence to form a stable hybridization complex;
- and
- detecting the presence or absence of an increase in the amount of hybridization complex relative to normal, wherein the increase in the amount of hybridization is indicative of the presence of a cutaneous melanoma that has an increase in copy number of 11q13.
