Storage system and data backup method for the same

A data backup method comprising:

• receiving from a network adapter with a first port connected to a communication path an instruction to create a duplicate of data stored in a storage device;
• receiving from the network adapter an instruction, after a duplicate of said data has been created, to send the created duplicate of the data to a backup device;
• performing a split operation on a logical volume on which is stored the data to be duplicated;
• providing to a channel adapter with a second port connected to the backup device the instruction for sending the created duplicate of the data to said backup device;
• and
• providing to said channel adapter the created duplicate of data to be sent via said second port to said backup device.

A storage system comprising:

• a first path including a first port that is connected to a communication path and that receives a file access request, and a storage device that stores data corresponding to the file access request;
• and
• a second path including a channel adapter that receives a backup instruction for backing up data stored in said storage device from a network adapter including said first port, and a second port that, in response to said backup instruction, transfers the data stored in said storage device to a backup device connected to said channel adapter,
• wherein a split operation is performed on a logical volume on which data to be backed up is stored.
