Abstract
A method and apparatus for adjusting the tilt of an inline amplifier. A controller reads the power of an amplifier twice. Then, if there is a change in power, a difference is calculated by subtracting the first power from the second power. A tilt correction is calculated by multiplying the change in power by a negative constant. The system then adjusts a gain control device by the tilt correction. Because of the simplicity of the algorithm and location of the controller, adjustments can be made to the gain tilt within approximately 100 μs and system failures can be avoided.

A method of compensating for spectral power tilt in an optical fiber coupled to an inline optical amplifier, the method comprising:
- reading a first power value associated with the inline optical amplifier;
- reading a second, subsequent power value associated with the inline optical amplifier;
- determining a difference value between the first power value and the second power value;
- multiplying the difference value by a predetermined constant to obtain an adjustment value;
- and
- adjusting a tilt controller to compensate for the spectral power tilt based on the adjustment value.
A computer-readable medium having stored thereon computer-executable instructions for compensating for spectral power tilt of a signal in an optical fiber, the computer-executable instructions comprising instructions for:
- reading a first optical power value associated with an inline optical amplifier;
- reading a second, subsequent optical power value associated with the inline optical amplifier;
- determining a difference value between the first and second optical power values;
- multiplying the difference value by a predetermined constant to obtain an adjustment value;
- and
- adjusting a tilt controller to compensate for the spectral power tilt based on the adjustment value.
