Abstract
The present invention relates to a novel method for providing a cathartic effort to a patient in need of cathartic induction, which comprises administering to the patient a cathartic-inducing effective amount of halogenated bioactive lipid comprising the following patial structure (I): The method is useful for relieving or preventing constipation, and also for cleansing the gastrointestinal tract.

A compound represented by the formula (IV):
- wherein L is oxo and M is hydroxy;
- A is —COOH;
- B′ is —CH2—CH2—;
- Z is
- wherein one of R4 and R5 is hydrogen and the other is hydroxy;
- R1 is a —(CH2)6— straight chain;
- X1′ and X2′ are halogen atoms;
- R2 is a single bond;
- and
- R3 is lower alkyl.
