Apparatus, and system, for efficient and reliable computation of results for mathematical functions

A system to efficiently compute results for mathematical functions, the system comprising:

• a memory configured to store data and executable code for a function range test module that includes,
• an interface configured to receive a mathematical function call, the call comprising a plurality of arguments for which a range of computable results for the mathematical function of the function call varies with respect to the values for the arguments;
• a control module configured to determine whether executing the mathematical function using the plurality of arguments will produce a result within the range of computable results;
• an error module configured to abort the mathematical function call prior to initiating execution of the mathematical function in response to determining that the values for the plurality of arguments produce a result outside the range of computable results;
• a processor coupled to the memory and configured to send mathematical function calls to the function range test module and further configured to execute instructions and return results to the function range test module;
• and
• an Input/Output (I/O) module coupled to the processor and configured to communicate with the function range test module.

A computer readable storage medium tangibly embodying a program of machine-readable instructions executable by a digital processing apparatus to perform operations to efficiently compute results for mathematical functions, the operations comprising:

• an operation to receive a mathematical function call, the call comprising a plurality of arguments for which a range of computable results for the mathematical function of the function call varies with respect to the values for the arguments;
• an operation to determine whether executing the mathematical function using the plurality of arguments will produce a result within the range of computable results;
• and
• an operation to abort the mathematical function call prior to initiating execution of the mathematical function in response to determining that the values for the plurality of arguments produce a result outside the range of computable results.
