Abstract
Apparatus including: a substrate layer having a substantially planar top surface; an optically conductive peak located and elongated on, and spanning a first thickness measured in a direction generally away from, the top surface; the optically conductive peak having first and second lateral walls each including distal and proximal lateral wall portions, the proximal lateral wall portions intersecting the top surface; and first and second sidewall layers located on the distal lateral wall portions, the sidewall layers not intersecting the top surface and spanning a second thickness that is less than the first thickness measured in the same direction.

An apparatus, comprising:
- an optical core region and an optical cladding region;
- an optical core layer being a part of the optical core region, the optical core layer having a top surface;
- an optically conductive peak including another part of the optical core region, the optically conductive peak being located and elongated on, and spanning a first height on the optical core layer;
- the optically conductive peak having first and second lateral walls each including distal and proximal lateral wall portions, the proximal lateral wall portions of the optically conductive peak intersecting the top surface of the optical core layer;
- and
- first and second sidewall layers located on the lateral walls, the sidewall layers not intersecting the top surface of the optical core layer, and spanning a second height that is less than the first height measured in the same direction.
An apparatus, comprising:
- a substrate having a top surface;
- an optically conductive mesa located and elongated on, and spanning a first height on, the top surface of the substrate;
- the optically conductive mesa including a first optical cladding layer on the top surface of the substrate, an optical core layer on the first optical cladding layer, and a second optical cladding layer on the optical core layer;
- the optically conductive mesa having first and second lateral walls each including distal and proximal lateral wall portions, the proximal lateral wall portions of the optically conductive mesa intersecting the top surface of the substrate;
- and
- first and second sidewall layers located on the lateral walls, the sidewall layers not intersecting the top surface of the substrate, and spanning a second height that is less than the first height measured in the same direction.
