Abstract
A polyester container having an enhanced level of crystallinity in the sidewall while maintaining a low level of crystallinity in a thickened base portion. The container is particularly useful as a refillable container which can withstand higher caustic wash temperatures and exhibits reduced flavor carryover, or as a hot-fill container. The container, which can be monolayer or multilayer, is also useful as a carbonated beverage, O2 or CO2 barrier, or beer container.
Claims24
A blow molded substantially transparent polyester container having a highly oriented, relatively thin and highly crystalline panel portion and a relatively thickened, low orientation and low crystallinity base portion, the container including a shoulder portion having an average crystallinity of 20-30%, the panel portion having an average crystallinity of 30-35%, the base portion including a chime area having an average crystallinity of 2-8% and a central gate area having an average crystallinity of 0-2%, and the container having an outer base between the chime area and panel portion having a crystallinity ranging between the average crystallinity of the chime area and panel portion, and an inner base between the gate area and chime area having a crystallinity ranging between the average crystallinity of the gate area and chime area.
